Khammam: The 191st birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule were held on a grand note in the district. Marking the day, the Department of Backward Classes held celebrations here at bypass road in Khammam on Tuesday.

Paying tributes to Phule, Joint Collector T Vinay Krishna Reddy said the Phule had strived hard to root out illiteracy, superstitions and caste discrimination from the society. He aggressively worked hard for rooting out the social evil of child marriage from the society.

“Drawing inspiration from him, the State government has introduced many welfare schemes for weaker sections and also women,” the Joint Collector said.

MLA Puvvada Ajay Kumar said Phule strived hard to root out untouchability and encouraged women education for establishing a healthy society. He urged the youth of present generation to draw inspiration from Phule and participate in social activities that help building a better society.

MLA Balasani Lakshmi Narayana, Mayor Dr Papa Lal, Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Parishad Marapaka Nagesh, Chief Planning Officer Z Ramdas, District Revenue Officer Purnachandra, District BC Welfare Officer Hrushishyam Reddy, BC Study Circle Principal Sri Latha, Deputy Mayor Battula Murali Prasad and Corporators paid tributes to Phule on the day.

In Suryapet, Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy along with Collector Surendra Mohan and Municipal Chairperson Pravallika participated in the celebrations. After paying floral tributes to a statue of Phule, the Minister said Phule brought a radical change in the society with his ideology and worked hard towards rooting out social evils.

On the occasion, the Minister distributed two power looms each to the 21 families of weavers’ families who returned to their native villages from Surat on the assurance of Reddy. The Energy Minister informed that rest of the 89 migrated weavers’ families would get power looms within six months.

In Nalgonda, Collector Gaurav Uppal along with TSFDC Chairman Banda Narendar Reddy, other officials and BC leaders garlanded the statue of Phule located at Clock Tower. In Yadadri, Collector Anita Rama chandran along with MLAs P Shekar Reddy and K Prabhakar Reddy participated in the Phule Jayanti celebrations held at Bhongir RDO office.
