Bangalore: Have you heard of older members in your family complain about how policemen were respected when they were younger and having a police visit your home was a thing of honour? That, ofcourse, changed overtime, and has become a but of a scandal to have a khaki - clad man stand at one's doorstep. Bangalore police aimed at changing just that, and in a unique way to bring in the new year, visited 51 homes in the city at 12 AM to return their stolen valuables.

The families, by their own admission were anxious when they saw policemen at their homes at 12 AM, but were pleasantly surprised and relieved to see their valuables returned to them, safely. Police commissioner T Suneel Kumar said the New Year gift initiative was taken up to surprise victims of burglary, vehicle theft and other property-related offences. He said, “We return recovered properties to their rightful owners after the court permission. This time, we decided to return the properties at the stroke of midnight to their owners and wish them happy new year. Also, we advised them on keeping valuables safe.”
