Visakhapatnam: Principal Secretary Sports LV Subramayam exhorted the athletes of water sports to strive for bagging a medal in Olympics.
Participating in a programme at Yachting and Water Sports Centre at Rushikonda in Visakhapatnam on Saturday, the Principal Secretary of Sports addressed the gathering of sea cadets, who are receiving training by Navy.
While kayaking and boating have already commenced at Mangamaripeta, water skiing, speed boating, zumbo surfing, and scuba diving will start during winter this year.
Water sports are being developed at the two beaches on a PPP basis.Apart from water sports, three places have been identified for setting up of swimming zones that are safe from currents and rock“Of the three defence services, Navy plays a pivotal role.
It is a proud moment for sea cadets as they became part of Navy services,” he said He further stated that the cadets should go ahead with courage to the complete five years of training successfully.
He noted that the state government has been lending full support for the benefit of sportspersons and improvement of sports.
Speaking on the occasion, Collector Pravin Kumar said that they have been giving priority to water sports in Rushikonda area.
“We are also chalking out plans to launch these activities like water sports and go-karting in other beaches in the city and in the district. Nearly, 70 persons are being trained in Water Sports Centre. If there is a scope, more will be accommodated for imparting training,” he said.
After setting up of facilities at Mangamaripeta and Rushikonda Beaches, there has been increase in the tourists’ footfall, he said.
Later, the rehearsals of water sports were taken up at Rushikonda Beach. After watching training of sportspersons in kayaking, surfing and yachting, the officials were impressed.
SAAP MD D Bangar Raju and district sports officer June Galiot explained the Principal Secretary about the water sports events being taking place at the centre.
