Post gaining the leadership position in the 125cc scooter market in India, Suzuki is planning to launch a new 150cc scooter. The 150cc scooter will rival the iconic Piaggio Vespa and even the Aprilia SR 150.

Suzuki is betting big on the Indian market as it is the largest market for parent Suzuki Corporation even with a meager 2.5 percent share in the overall two-wheeler market in India. In the scooters and above 150cc bikes segment, the company enjoys a market share of five percent.

The Japanese giant intends to sell one million vehicles per annum by 2020 and take the Suzuki brand’s cumulative business in India to over 3 million units. The company also intends to double the market share to 10 percent by 2020.

Suzuki is clearly focused on the scooters and premium bikes segment and Sajeev Rajasekharan, Executive Vice-President, Suzuki India, says, “For this, we will be bringing in at least two bikes and scooters each year. The strategy will straddle between scooters, which is the volume grosser for us now and bikes where we will be having only 150cc and above engine capacity.”

The Japanese automaker is investing at least 200 crores on the development of new products in India. Currently, it has the Access 125 (in drum and disc brake variants), Let’s, Hayate SP, Gixxer and Gixxer SF in its portfolio. These apart, the company also sells the GSX-S1000, GSX-R1000, Hayabusa, V-Strom 1000 and the Intruder M1800R.
