Students can reapply for visa: US diplomat

So people should think what and where they should study,” Michael Pelletier, Deputy Chief of Mission of the US Diplomatic Mission to India told reporters here on Tuesday. When asked why Indian students were sent back on their arrival to the US, Michael said, it was not deportation they were “turned back.” Michael said the students were sent back after examining case by case.
"Each is an individual case. What I can say is, as a general rule, the immigration officials, when you apply for permission to enter the states at the border crossing (whether that's an airport or a port or land crossing), the border officials are going to want to hear your reason for study. They will look at your visa and they want to see the documentation that supports that.
"If there is some reason to believe that you are travelling on the wrong visa or that your purpose is not aligned with the visa, then they may have issues.." When asked why students were handcuffed and put behind the bars, Michael stated “I don’t think there is a question of crime being admitted. It’s about having an admission and then being turned back.
If entry is denied by immigration officials such people are kept in the safe place and they are sent back at the earliest.” Michael said the embassy worked with the Ministry of External Affairs, local governments in India, department of homeland security and US government to figure out the issue following reports of Indian students being sent back.
The official said India is the second largest sender of the foreign students to the United States of America for studies. Going by the statistics of 2014-15, the official further said there were about 1.30 lakh Indian students in the US. Michael noted the students who wish to study in America should follow the due process and complete the paper work.
