Hyderabad: Tension prevailed in the Addagutta area of Secunderabad under the Tukaramgate police station limits on Wednesday after a cell phone tower was installed overnight on top of a building. Two of the women agitators climbed over the tower in protest.

Even as the residents of A Section Colony in Addagutta were resisting the idea of installation of cell phone towers close to their houses for some time, the landlord of a building surreptitiously made arrangements to install a tower on his building on Tuesday night. By the time, the residents of the locality woke up on Wednesday morning, the task was completed.

On noticing the tower in the morning, the residents were angered and entered into an argument with the building owner, which snowballed into a full-fledged protest by the women. While some of them cut the cables connecting the tower using knives and spade, some others damaged the equipment before the police could stop them.

In the meanwhile, two women climbed over the tower and threatened to jump if the tower was not dismantled. Unable to handle the situation the landlord called the police, who tried to quell the mob and ended up as silent spectators.

The protesting women alleged that the authorities connived with the landlord and allowed the construction of the tower, jeopardising the health of thousands of residents in the vicinity. They also questioned the GHMC for giving permission for the installation of the tower without taking into account the local opinion.

Even as the high drama continued for hours, the police assured the residents that the tower would be brought down after talks with the landlord and the service provider, and convinced the two women who had climbed up the tower, to come down.
