Mahbubnagar: The poor allocation of funds to Palamuru University in the State budget highlights the fact that it is being meted out a raw deal in the TRS regime. The discontentment among students and academicians over the neglect of the university came to the fore during the second Formation Day celebrations of Telangana.
University yet to receive even the allotted `16 crore
According to student unions, Finance Minister Eatala Rajender allocated only Rs 16 crore for the university in the two budgets presented by him. Except for construction of buildings for the university, all its other problems remained unsolved even after the formation of Telangana State. The university with a student community numbering 1,800 is facing a severe shortage of teaching staff.
There are only eight regular professors. Other faculty members are working on a contract basis. At present, the university offers 16 courses. “Though the students of Palamuru University took an active part in the struggle for separate Telangana, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao who represented Mahbubnagar in the Lok Sabha earlier, failed to take concrete measures for the development of the backward district, educationally.
Their demands for introduction of new courses and allocation of a sum of Rs 100 crore for the university are yet to be conceeded,” said a student activist. Speaking to The Hans India, Chintakayala Ravi, leader of a student’s union said, “The TRS government which made a tall promise of free education from KG to PG, failed to allocate adequate funds for the development of Palamuru University.
The varsity is yet to get even the meager funds allocated in the State budget.” “It appears as if the TRS government is not really committed to the development of Palamuru University. The varsity has not achieved any significant growth during the two years regime of TRS,” said Raju Naik, another student leader.
Refuting the charges, TRS student wing leader Sudeep Reddy claimed that the university which was ignored in united Andhra Pradesh, achieved development only after the formation of Telangana. The varsity got new buildings, library and hostels because of the emphasis laid on infrastructure development in the TRS regime, he said.
“The TRS Government should focus on development of the university to promote higher education in the backward Mahabubnagar district,” said ABVP State leader T Lakshman. “All universities in the State need to be developed equally as higher education is the key to economic growth,” said an academician.
