Hyderabad: Rainwater harvesting pits can do wonders claims the residents of Shree apartments in Sainathpuram, ECIL. The residents said mere Rs 25,000 spent for constructing rainwater harvesting pit has saved them Rs 2.5 lakh, which has been spent on water tankers over the years. This is not it, the residents said; even after the city receiving scanty rainfall last year, the construction of harvesting pit has helped the residents in hiring only four water tankers in 2016, when the rest of the city has been facing acute water crises.
Explaining about the water conservation and rain water harvesting pits, Shree apartment’s secretary Pushpa Gupta said that they have constructed eight vertical G+1 blocks (apartment) in the year 1992. She said until 2009 the water needs of sixteen blocks have been served with the bore well, which was dug up to 170 feet. But in 2009 the bore well had completely dried up, due several bore wells dug in the vicinity, which forced the Shree apartment’s residents to rely on the water tankers. Pushpa said they have spent whooping Rs 2, 40,680 on the water tankers from 2009 to 2014.
Pushpa said that they had also tried to dig another bore well in 2013 with Rs 37, 950 in the apartment premises but all their efforts went in vein as they fail to trace water even after digging it to 500 feet. The residents not waiting for the government's help has decided to construct a rain water harvesting pit. They strongly believed that constructing a harvesting pit could be only a permanent solution to serve their water needs. Pushpa said that they have constructed a rainwater harvesting pit in the apartment premises by spending mere Rs 25,000.
She said that the impact of rain water was minimal in 2015 as a result they have spent about 40,000 on the water tankers. But the harvesting pit has a immense impact in 2016, she said the 170 feet bore well got recharged and supplied sufficient water to all sixteen blocks. Interestingly, she said that they have hired only four water tankers, even during the peak summer from February to May.
The Shree apartment secretary said that rain water harvesting pits are only solution to increase the ground water levels in the city. She said that the even when the city has been facing the acute water crises all sixteen blocks in the apartment had managed with the water yielded from the rain water harvesting pits even with the scanty rainfall in 2015. Pushpa said that the resident in the Shree apartments would have surplus water during 2017 summer if the city receives normal rainfall.
