Hyderabad: A two-judge bench of the High Court at Hyderabad comprising Justice Ramasubramanian and Justice A Shankara Narayana on Wednesday directed that counselling should be conducted to fill the unfilled postgraduate seats in government Medical Colleges in Telangana State and Andhra Pradesh.

The bench was dealing with a batch of petitions filed by Dr Apoorva and others. The petitioners, both service and non-service candidates, complained against the manner in which web counselling was affected for postgraduate courses in both States.

While the petitioners from both States pointed out to various irregularities and illegalities, the bench chose to not go into the said issues. The court however was concerned about a huge number of seats going unfilled. S V Simhadri, counsel for the petitioner pointed out that the candidates could not be blamed for the irregularities and therefore the seats should be filled.

The bench before passing orders also heard Dammulapati Srinivas, Advocate General of AP and N Ramachandra Rao, the Additional Advocate General of Telangana State. The bench noticed that 82 seats in AP and 32 seats in Telangana State were lying unfilled after the prescribed last date.
Vivek Chandrasekhar, counsel for the Medical Council, pointed out that the MCI was bound to go strictly by the schedule fixed by the Apex Court.

Speaking for the bench Justice Ramasubramanian pointed out that non-filling of over 100 seats at the postgraduate level would not only be a huge waste of public money but would also cause huge damage to public interest and public welfare. The bench directed that the counselling should be held on July 23 and directed the batch of cases to be listed on July 27.
