Nalgonda: The aim of the Haritha Haram programme is not being fulfilled with the officials’ apathy in protecting the planted saplings. The government has launched its flagship programme in all the districts to increase the green cover in the State.

As part of the programme, several VIPs and officials have planted saplings in Nalgonda district also with enthusiasm.

But the dried up and unprotected saplings in colonies in the city, where VIPs reside, mirrors the carelessness of the officials in taking care of the planted saplings.

The saplings planted by Nalgonda MP Gutha Sukender Reddy on July 13 near SPR School in 16th ward and near a park in 14th ward were vanished within two weeks after they were planted.

The district Minister, Jagadish Reddy reiterates Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s request to protect the saplings after planting, at every plantation drive.

But he failed to monitor the saplings planted on the occasion of his birthday near the Minister’s guest house in the city. There were no tree guards to protect these saplings.

Also the officials have very eagerly dug several pits alongside the road that leads to the Minister’s guest house forgot to plant saplings. Now these pits were filled with rainwater.

Chief Minister’s Additional Secretary Smitha Sabarwal and Haritha Haram OSD Priyanka Varghese have inspected the planted saplings at various places in the district on July 21.

As a part of their tour, the duo, along with the in-charge District Collector Dr N Satyanarayana planted saplings at Vidyuth Nagar and Shanthi Nagar in the city. But some of these trees were dried up while some were devoured by animals due to the apathy of the officials concerned.

A senior citizen and nature lover, Narsimha Rao lauded the government for its decision to plant about five crore saplings under Haritha Haram-2 programme to drive away drought from the district.

But he criticised the officials on their negligence for leaving the saplings in lurch instead of carefully nursing them.
