Tandur/Vikarabad: Rains under the impact of a low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal wreaked havoc in Tandur and Vikarabad mandals of Ranga Reddy district. The flash floods triggered by the heavy rains claimed two lives in Vikarabad mandal of the district during the past 24 hours. Other parts of the district also received widespread rains.

During the past 24 hours, Vikarabad recorded 9 cm of rain and Tandur 4 cm. In Tandur mandal, power supply remained disrupted, roads and culverts developed breaches at many places, a part of the road bridge was washed away affecting road communications between Palamuru and Tandur. The Roads and Buildings officials said it would take at least two more days to restore the rain-damaged road bridge.

Kagna River in Tandur caused extensive damage. Tanks, streams and rivers are flowing at danger level as inflows into increased. Swirling waters from Kotapalli project caused a culvert to develop a breach. Power supply to about 30 villages in Yalal, Basheerabad and Tandur mandals remained disrupted as an electric pole carrying 33-kv line got uprooted. Electricity Department officials said it would take at least 12 hours to restore the power supply to the affected villages.

Sri Mahalingeswara temple on the banks of Jeevangi stream in Basheerabad mandal is under flood water. In Vikarabad mandal, streams and rivulets are in spate. Extensive damage is caused to standing crops in the mandal. Train services on Vikarabad-Bidar route have been cancelled as earth under the railway tracks was washed away. Hyderabad-Bidar inter-city train returned to Vikarabad. One person was washed away while crossing the stream on a moped at Rallachittampalli.

A housewife Sarita died when she and her husband Venkat Reddy tried to cross the stream. Venkata Reddy, however, managed to swim to safety. They hailed from Mylardevupalli. Similarly, a Moulana belonging to Nagasamunder village died while his wife Sharifa was rescued safely while crossing the stream. A car was washed away in Madvapur stream in Bantwaram mandal. However, the occupants of the car Malesh Yadav and Tuljaram escaped unhurt.
