Hyderabad: A good number of producers from the T-town are jetting off to Chennai to grab the rights of Tamil films for enormous sums ranging between `1 crore and `38 crore. The rights they are buying for whopping sums are meant for dubbing them into Telugu and releasing them in two Telugu States. The misadventure” of these producers has been causing disquiet in the T-town.
Even after suffering a devastating loss to the tune of Rs 13-14 crore on both the Rajanikanth’s Kabali and his son’s-in-law and Tamil star Dhanush’s Rail, producers from the Telugu States continue to make a beeline to buy Tamil films. It is described by critics as “chasing a mirage because many dubbed movies have tanked at the box office.said a leading distributor Venkateswara Rao, who appreciated the announcement of veteran filmmaker Dasari Narayana Rao that he would shun functions to be held on the occasion of release of dubbed movies.
Dasari garu was right to say that dubbed moves are shrinking the space of medium and small-budget Telugu films. The craze for dubbed movies has reached a new high as Tamil films with even new faces are bought for hefty sums.
For instance, Tamil film Joker is being bought for Rs 1 crore and producer of Tamil actor Sivakarthikeyan’s next film Remo is demanding Rs 1 crore even though Sivakarthikeyan had no release in Telugu till date and above all dubbing rights for 10 to 15 Tamil films are blocked on the muhurat day itself” said Rao. Although, it is not always a safe bet to invest in dubbed movies, but roaring success of “Bichagadu” which drew more than Rs 27 crore revived the interest in dubbed movies.
Every film cannot be a hit like Bichagadu, so producers have to pick and choose among good Tamil films rather blindly putting in their money and Chennai has become new destination for Telugu producers,” said distributor Ramakrishna, who claimed Tamil star Vikram’s films Inkokakadu” managed to break even since it was bought for meager Rs 5.5. crore.
His top-notch performance in a dual role saved the day for him but these days Tamil stars are not bankable since many have delivered flops because of lack of good content in them” he adds.
However, another distributor Bharat Bushan countered it and said, “Tamil stars popularity is not waning and is actually on the rise by the day. “Tamil Surya’s next filmSingham-3 is quoted for Rs 16 crore and Dhanush next film has been bought for more than Rs 2 crore and Vijay Antony’s film Bethaludu was sold for Rs 2.75 crore so Tamil stars will keep minting money in AP, TS” he concluded.
