Hyderabad: The State government is planning to set up a Horticulture Corporation to give a boost to cultivation of vegetables and fruits, thus helping farmers to get additional income. Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao is understood to be getting ready with plans to convert the Agriculture Department's horticulture wing into a corporation to encourage plantations to raise fruit and vegetables, with a view to focusing attention on generation and production of food crops.

Chandrashekar Rao will constitute the corporation in two or three days and make suitable appointments, according to sources. The government also proposes to set up crop colonies for boosting vegetable/fruit cultivation across the State.

Its endeavour is to offer an alternative to farmers who cultivate cotton. The setting up of the Horticulture Corporation is likely to yield nominated posts to some TRS leaders, according to sources.

Once famous for growing grapes, Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad districts have been witnessing a drastic change in their cultivation patterns. Residents of the two districts are now being forced to depend on securing vegetables from neighbouring States.
