Hyderabad: The State government will take up Phase–II of fish seed supply in the third or fourth week of November, benefitting 19,000 tanks at the gram panchayat level, at an estimated cost of Rs 8-9 crore.

According to officials, currently a survey is being undertaken about the feasibility of releasing fingerlings into the tanks that retain water at least up to one-third of the full tank levels.

Since almost all the fingerlings, including Rohu, Bocha and some other carp varieties, being distributed by the government need at least six months to grow to their full size, the Department of Fisheries has decided to first test the waters by conducting a survey at the gram panchayat level.

“If a tank is spread across 50 acres, we would ensure that it retains water in the month of April or May, up to 20 acres. Keeping this in view, we would release fish seeds needed for 20 acres,” said Animal Husbandry Director D Venkateswarlu, who is also heading the Fisheries Department.

As part of the process, the sarpanches of villages having huge tanks are being roped in by the officials, who are directly approaching them as part of the survey. In Phase–1, around 4,300 (departmental) tanks are being covered.

As part of this, more than 40 crore fingerlings are being distributed at an estimated cost of Rs 43 crore. “For the second phase, we need around 10 crore seeds, which would cost around Rs 8 to 9 crore, as they are priced at Rs 0.90 each,” the official added.
