Hyderabad: With the pilot project of illuminating 12 lakh homes in 25 municipalities with LED bulbs nearing completion, the Municipal
Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) Department has now decided to extend the scheme to all the urban local bodies in the State.

According to senior officials in the MAUD, the operation installing LED bulbs is at a brisk pace and it would be completed soon.

The aim of the program is to save power and the same time to reduce power bills for consumers. With the latest technology, these bulbs are
energy efficient in lighting and LED (Light Emitting Diode) is a semiconductor device that converts electricity into light. The State government
during June kick-started the pilot project in 25 municipalities.

According to officials, the aim of the government is to provide LED bulbs to 90 lakh households in the State. The government has decided to
supply each LED bulb of 9 Watts at Rs 10 to the consumers. The market price of the same bulb is Rs 74.60. The department has given the
responsibility of distributing the bulbs to ESSL (Energy Efficiency Services Limited).

The Commissioner and Directorate of Municipal Administration (CDMA) issued a circular in this regard on November 11. Sources said that the
implementing agency had been asked to implement scheme within Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) jurisdiction in three
months from the date of initiation. The ULBs in the State have been asked to enter into an agreement with ESS for supply of the bulbs.

The Municipal Commissioners were directed to install the energy meters at respective lights switching points, take up works to replacement of
damaged underground cable at main roads, draw neutral wires from overhead lines to all the areas of the municipalities, install proper switch
boxes, panels and MCBs, etc. at each switching point, rectify cable terminations at switching points and a separate dedicated street line
required to install LED street light.
