Implement SC order of equal pay for equal work: CITU
In support of the demand, a large number of contract and outsourcing workers and unorganised sector workers have taken to the streets under the aegis of the CITU here on Thursday.
Hanamkonda: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has demanded the State government to implement Supreme Court’s judgment on ‘equal pay for equal work’ for all.
In support of the demand, a large number of contract and outsourcing workers and unorganised sector workers have taken to the streets under the aegis of the CITU here on Thursday.
They taken out a massive rally from University Arts and Science College and a dharna was staged at the district collectorate.Speaking on the occasion, CITU state secretary Paladugu Bhaskar said Supreme Court in its landmark judgment in October this year held that contractual employees were entitled to wages on par with permanent staff under the 'equal-pay-for-equal-work' principle.
All daily-wage employees, ad-hoc appointees, those engaged on casual and contract basis were eligible for equal pay for equal work. ‘In a welfare State, an employee engaged for the same work, cannot be paid less than another. Such an action strikes at the very foundation of human dignity,’ he said quoting the apex court judgment.
Hence the principle of 'equal pay for equal work' has to be applied to all engaged as daily wagers, casual and contractual employees performing the same duties as the regular employees, Bhaskar demanded.
CITU district president Y Yada Naik and secretary Ragula Ramesh noted that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, who promised to regularise all contract and outsourcing employees after coming to power, has failed to deliver the promise even after two and half years of his rule.
The government should ensure minimum wages as per GO No: 14 and bring out a comprehensive act for the welfare of unorganised labourers.
Telangana government should stand as a model in the country by implementing Supreme Court judgment and end the practice of differential treatment with temporary employees, they added.
CITU leaders G Prabhakar Reddy, U Nageshwar Rao, E Srinivas, V Sarangapani, Jannu Prakash and M Ramaswamy took part in the agitation along with nearly 3000 contract and outsourcing workers.
