Director General of Prisons V K Singh says the Prisons Department is aiming to become self-sufficient during this financial year

Warangal: As many as 70,000 illiterate prisoners across the State have been made literate during the last two years, said Director General (Prisons and Correctional Services) Vinoy Kumar Singh.

The prisoners, who could not read and write, are now literate thanks to a reformative initiative, ‘Vidyadanam Scheme.’ The department aims at turning jails into social service centres and employment generation centres to benefit the prisoners.

During the year 2016-17 the department had earned Rs 7.13 crore. It was aimed to make the department financially self-sufficient to avoid seeking any financial assistance from the government and instead it was intended to pay dividends to the government, he noted.

The Director General was here on Wednesday to inaugurate a visitors’ lounge at the Warangal Central Prison for the convenience of the family members coming for a ‘Mulakhat’ with the prisoners.

Speaking to media persons on the occasion, he said during this year the department was planning to start 100 petrol bunks where at least 20 prisoners, who completed their jail term, would be employed. Similarly efforts were being made to provide employment to prisoners coming out of jails with the help of private companies.

He said that the department were making efforts to curb corruption in the Prisons Department and also institute a financial reward of Rs 5,000 to any person for exposing corruption in the department.

Singh also said the efforts were on to shift Warangal Central Prison from the city to the outskirts following the government’s directions. A request to the government was made to ensure that all the required facilities are available at the new premises.

According to the prison authorities, the Director General is likely to visit Unikicherla village on Thursday under the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation limits to where the Central Prison would be shifted. Nearly 100 acres of government land was said to be available at the village.

It might be noted that the officials earlier had identified the land belonging to the Veterinary College at Mamnur on the outskirts of Warangal for the construction of new Central Prison.

But the college authorities had reportedly denied offering the land. Warangal range Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) K Keshava Naidu and others were also present.
