Hyderabad: The Baobab tree and Majnu Burj are two historically important tourist spots near the Golkonda Fort but if tourists want to see them, they would have to go through frisking by the Hyderabad Golf Club (HGC) security personnel.

It may be added that the Burj and the African Baobab tree were not given to the HGC and are under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

When asked why security personnel of HGC asked visitors questions, officials said there were a lot of members and even visitors to the Golf Club and they needed to make sure that no one got injured. It was just a precautionary measure, they said. D V K Raju, Joint Secretary, HGC, further added that the Golf Club was opened a few years ago and there was no construction activity going on.

Lubna Sarwath, a social activist said, “One has to write his/her name and share the mobile number with the security guard, failing which he would walk all the way alongside the visitor till the Naya Qila. What right does the HGC have? Moreover, the Naya Qila is barricaded.”

Sravanthi, a student of University of Hyderabad and a regular to the fort said, “It is unnerving to say the least. Tourists have every right to watch these historical structures without someone hovering above them.”

The ASI officials maintained that the conservation was an ongoing process and all repair work was being done based on specified norms.

The conspicuous absence of sign boards at Naya Qila to show the way to the Baobab tree and the Majnu Burj is something the ASI should look into, said Lubna.
