Hyderabad: Despite a windfall of Rs 350 crore immediately after announcement of demonetisation, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is falling short of its target to collect property tax. According to GHMC officials, the corporation had aimed Rs 1,200 crore as the target for property tax but it could collect only Rs 800 crore so far.

Officials claim that the civic body would not be able to reach the target. According to GHMC officials, demonetisation has completely ignored revenue collections and concentrated only on e-payments (online payments).

Officials seeing the manner in which people had come forward to pay property tax after demonetisation were under the impression that they would exceed the target by about Rs 200 crore but that did not happen.

A senior GHMC official told The Hans India that due to demonetisation the corporation had ignored property tax rationalisation. He said that the corporation had revised the property tax rates of only 2, 47,460 properties and collected about Rs 24.74 crore.

He said due the Swachh Survekshan and notification for election of MLC from Teacher’s constituency seat consisting of Hyderabad, Mahbubnagar and Rangareddy districts, the ground level staff of all wings have been drafted for preparatory work.

Besides this, the official stated that during March the corporation should clear Rs 1,100 crore pending annual bills like road repair works, land acquisition etc which would be impossible without State government's aid.

Meanwhile, the corporation had prepared a draft budget proposal for 2017-18 which would be approved in council meeting on February 18.
