Will not seek votes, if 2 lakh 2BHK houses are not constructed: KCR

Hyderabad: Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Friday said that he will not seek votes in the next elections if the government fails to construct two lakh double bedroom houses by the end of 2017. Intervening during the general discussion on the budget in State Assembly, the Chief Minister said that already works for construction of 30,000 houses have been initiated and rest of the houses would be completed by the end of this year.

KCR said the contractors have been busy with the project works and hence they did not show much interest in taking the housing scheme. He said following the efforts made by the government, they have now agreed to take up construction of the houses and 1.7 lakh houses would be grounded soon.

The Chief Minister said that one double bedroom house of TRS government was equal to seven weaker section houses constructed by the erstwhile governments and the two lakh houses would be equal to 14 lakh weaker section houses constructed by the previous governments. “The government is committed to fulfill its promise to provide housing for all and if I cannot do it by end of this year I will not seek votes,” he said.

Reacting to the question raised by Leader of Opposition K Jana Reddy towards the proposed corporation for Most Backward Classes, the Chief Minister said that the issue of identifying the castes has been referred to the BC Commission and it would submit a report soon. The Chief Minister asked the opposition not to confuse people by raising doubts by saying that power tariff would be raised.

He said the government has taken over the debt burden of the power distribution companies which amounts to Rs 12,000 crore. As a result of this, the power utilities would save Rs 890 crore as interest every year and they were asked to pass on the benefit to the consumers. The bonds issued by RBI on behalf of power distribution companies got tremendous response and the investors made a beeline to purchase them, KCR said.

Defending raising of loans by the government, KCR said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that it was important to create resources for development. China has achieved $ 11 trillion economy as it shed the old economic concepts of less loans. KCR said that while the government has been taking loans, it was also clearing them. A budget provision has been made to repay Rs 20,000 crore this year, he said.

Justifying the policy of the government to encourage sheep and fish farming, he said that poultry farms of Telangana account for 30 per cent of that industry in the country and pharma accounts for 40 per cent of that industry.

KCR came down heavily on the opposition alleging that they were a frustrated lot and unable to digest the achievements of the government.
