Hyderabad: In order to ease traffic in the IT corridors, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) had decided to construct a 400 metre tunnel near Khajaguda junction at an estimated cost of Rs 400 crore.

The project, which will come up near ORR, is intended to meet the growing needs of the city. Officials explain that four exit points at the tunnel is expected to help ease the traffic flow during peak hours.

The traffic volume at IT corridors has already reached highest point and as many as 50,000 vehicles pass through the point during peak hours. According to data collected by the Town Planning wing, the GHMC has granted permission to construct corporate firms in 250 acres at this area. The firm are expected to generate employment for two lakh youth. Once the new firms come up, the number of vehicles will further go up.

Against this backdrop, the GHMC has decided to construct a four lane (two on the each side) tunnel near the Khajaguda junction. The Official said the GHMC has hired a consultancy firm, Stoop Consultants, to study and submit a Detailed Project Report at the earliest.

When asked about it, a senior GHMC official told The Hans India that the tunnel would not only ease the traffic but save commuters time during the peak hours. He said the GHMC had already conducted a geo-technical survey during the past three months and are waiting for the DPR.

The GHMC official said the GHMC had decided to dig a tunnel in order to avoid possible legal hurdles. The legal hurdle, according to officials, may be posed by NGOs campaigning for saving heritage rocks. He said even though it would have been cheaper to blast the rock and lay a four lane road, the government has decided to build the tunnel as it would give additional attraction to the city.

He said that the private consultant would submit the DPR in two months and GHMC is likely to call for tenders in August and complete the tunnel construction in less than nine months.
