Khammam: A day after chilli growers ransacked the furniture at Khammam Agriculture Market Yard, venting their ire over sharp decline in prices to their produce, now it is the time for politics to take centre stage with the ruling and the Opposition party leaders trading charges against each other.

The market yard that looked like a battlefield on Friday resumed operations by cancelling the holiday however there was not much cheer for the farmers on Saturday as well. Though, the highest price that chilli commanded was Rs 6,600 per quintal, the traders clinched major portion of the produce descended on the market at a model price of 4,500 per quintal. The model price of tal chilli (inferior quality) was Rs 1,900 per quintal.

On the other hand, the government which predicted protests on the aftermath of Friday’s incident imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC in Khammam Police Commissionerate limits up to May 12.

Citing the prohibitory orders, the police sent back T-JAC chairman Prof M Kodandaram, who was supposes to visit the market yard on Saturday, from Suryapet-Khammam border last night. On Saturday, the police did not allow any party to carry out protests.

Even before the leaders of Congress, TDP, CPM, CPI and CPI-ML New Democracy set themselves out to stage protest, the police detained them and remanded them in different police stations. Stating that the government is trying to throttle the voice of the Opposition, the TPCC Working President Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, who was detained at Konijerla Police Station, demanded the release of farmers, who were arrested on Friday after the melee, besides providing a remunerative price to chilli.

The Congress which had a long history of bringing social, political and economical changes in the country will not deter with the terrorising tactics of the TRS government, he said.

Sathupally TDP MLA Sandra Venkata Veeraiah found fault with the District Collector D S Lokesh Kumar for pointing finger towards him. It is reported that the Collector reportedly sent a report to the government that situation at the market yard turned violent after Sandra met the protesting farmers.

“I was at the market yard to extend my solidarity with the farmers who were denied remunerative price to their produce,” Sandra said, refuting the allegations of ruling party leaders that Opposition was provoking the farmers.

Former TDP MP Nasma Nageswara Rao said the ruling party appears to be sceptic that Opposition parties are behind every agitation. The farmers who have been facing hardships lost their cool at the market yard.

CPM State secretary Tammineni Veerabhadram said the government totally failed to protect the interests of the farmers. “Although farmers are in distress due to decline in chilli prices, the government didn’t come forward to lend a helping hand.” CPI State secretary Chada Venkat Reddy demanded that the government withdraw the cases foisted against the farmers.

Meanwhile, Telangana Telugu Desam Working President A Revanth Reddy, who was scheduled to visit the market yard on Saturday, returned to Hyderabad midway after he came to know the death of a close relative.
