Telangana makes record procurement of paddy

Civil Supplies Commissioner inspects paddy purchase centres in four districts
Bhongir: Civil Supplies Commissioner C V Anand on Thursday made a surprise visit to inspect Rabi season paddy purchase centres in four districts - Yadadri, Janagaon, Warangal Urban and Warangal Rural. He enquired about the conditions and problems in paddy purchase centres with concerned district officials and farmers. He also reviewed the situation with district Civil Supplies managers and district officers.
The Commissioner said his department procured a total of 45 lakh metric tons (lmt) of paddy till Wednesday in 2016-17 including 17 lmt in Kharif and 28 lmt in Rabi season. In the coming 20 days, the department would procure about 10 to 15 lmt of paddy, said the Commissioner. In Telangana region, only in 2010-11 Rabi season, 17 lmt of paddy was purchased and in the history of Telangana State, in this year’s Rabi season till now, 28 lmt of paddy had been purchased.
He said 43 lmt of paddy arrived as against the expected 37 lmt. As per estimated 37 lmt paddy, 9.25 gunny bags had been in possession in purchase centres, which were brought by road from Kolkata four months in advance instead of by train, as it was time taking.
But as the total quantity reached 43 lmt, one crore gunny bags were required, and as it was taking two to three months to arrive from Kolkata, to avoid difficulties to the farmers bags had been procured from neighbouring States of Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh by road. A total of Rs 2,200 crore had been paid to five lakh farmers through online for the purchase of 28 lakh metric tons of paddy from 3,020 purchase centres, Anand said.
District Collectors, Joint Collectors, Civil Supplies Officials and other employees had worked very hard in this tough situation as the paddy procurement had exceeded the expectation. They had taken efforts to clear the difficulties and steps in paddy purchase, he said, adding that mainly officials took measures for transporting paddy without any problem.
From the next Kharif season, paddy would be purchased from all the new 31 districts of Telangana. As per procedures, if the paddy was meeting the standards set by the Central government, it was purchased in purchase centres from farmers without any difficulty. If the humidity in paddy was more than the standard 17 percent, it would take two to three days time to dry and slight delay would be possible, Anand said.
