Hyderabad: The State government’s flagship programme Mahatma Jyothiba Phule BC Overseas Vidya Nidhi scheme is taking off after it was initially hit by the Trump Affect, dampening the spirits of hundreds of students aspiring to go to the United States of America to pursue higher studies by availing financial assistance under the scheme.

According to official sources, applications of about 40 out of 100 students, selected under the scheme for 2016-17 financial year, had been cleared as the students uploaded all the necessary documents.

Speaking to The Hans India, a senior official said the students had submitted their admission letters, visa approvals for availing financial assistance under the scheme. “About 50 per cent of the students who had applied for financial assistance under the scheme were admitted by various higher education institutions in Australian universities,” he added.

The documents uploaded by the students had been referred to the officials concerned in respective districts for verification which might take about a week’s time. Once it is over then the bills would be prepared and the first installment of Rs 10 lakh would be credited into the student’s bank accounts, he said.

The State government had already released Rs 3 crore to meet the expenditure. Apart from Australia students were opting to go to Canada giving third preference to USA, UK and Singapore.

It may be mentioned here that the change in the preference for foreign Universities came after about 110 students, who were selected under the scheme earlier, could not get study visa for USA, the official said.

While the remaining 60 students were expected to upload their admission documents soon, the State government will meanwhile start the registration of students to extend financial assistance under the scheme for 2017-18, the sources added.
