Kothagudem: Tension prevailed in the town following series of arrests by the police since Friday in the wake of the strike by the workers of the Singareni Collieries. Undeclared prohibitory orders seem to be in place in the town. A bandh was observed in the town on Saturday to protest against the arrests and a bike rally was also taken out. To protest against what they called illegal arrests, the SCCL workers burnt an effigy of State government.

In Godavarikhani, over 100 persons were arrested. CITU State Secretary M Saibabu was picked up from his union office and also another trade union leader Raji Reddy was also arrested. Peddapalli district CPI (M) unit Secretary Yakaiah was also put under arrest.

In Srirampur, 52 striking workers and leaders of various outfits were arrested. In Bhadradri-Kothagudem district, as many 130 persons, including CPI district secretary Shabeer Pasha and CITU district general secretary Annavaram Satyanarayana, were arrested ,The police dispersed bike rallyists in the town and arrested.

The three town police arrested and lodged them in the two town police station. The arrested included former Congress Minister Vanama Venkateswara Rao at the bus stand center while taking out a bike rally to express solidarity with the bandh observed in the town by the SCCL workers.

In Ramagundam, CITU leaders M Saibabu, Bhupati Rao, AITUC leader Sitaramayya, HMS leader Riyaz Ahmed, INTUC leader Janak Prasad were among those who were arrested. In Ramakrishnapur, 25 persons were arrested in Ramakrishnapur, 15 in Bellampally and 10 in Bhupalapally.

In Mancherial district, a memorandum was submitted to the district collector condemning the arrests. Mass organisations took out protest rallies in the coal belt area to protest against the illegal arrests.In the district head quarters, outfits like CITU, SFI, KVPS and Vyavasaya Karmika Sangham consigned the government in the effigy to flames.

The Singareni workers alleged that SCCL management became a stooge of the TRS government. Condemning the SCCL propaganda that the coal production was augmented, they described it as ploy of the management to confuse the workers.
Meanwhile, the Singareni Collieries Contract Workers decided to attend office wearing black badge as mark of solidarity with the striking workers.

The coal belt bandh called by the national level trade unions to condemn the TRS government and SCCL management attitude on the coal miners strike was successful. Workers of CPI (M), CPI, Congress, TDP and BJP took out a bike rally. Besides Vanama Venkateswara Rao and Annavaram Satyanarayana, Koneru Satyanarayana of TDP, Yedavalli Krishna of Congress, Yerra Kamesh of BJP, MA Razak of CPI (M), Tatiparti Anil of CPI and others were arrested.
