Hyderabad: Mobile phones of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation staff have gone silent on account of non-payment of bills worth Rs 58 lakh. This has led to break in communication network seriously.

Citizens are finding it difficult to reach the officials on the listed numbers of the civic body to get their grievances redressed. There are nearly 90 WhatsApp groups in the corporation to carry out day-to-day operations, which got affected.

According to GHMC official, the civic body has been paying Rs 2,000 towards monthly mobile to all heads of the departments, including commissioner, zonal commissioners, chief engineers and equivalent cadres.

The GHMC has been paying Rs 1,375 for Category II employees, including superintendent engineers, executive engineers, assistant medical officers of health (AMoHs), all directors, chief city planners, assistant city planners, chief veterinary officer and other equivalent cadres.

The corporation has been paying Rs 625 to Category III employees, including tax inspectors, license officers, bill collectors and other equivalent cadres.

A highly-placed source in the GHMC told The Hans India that the most of the officials have exceeded their mobile data and calls usage beyond their permissible limits. The corporation has been clearing mobile bills according to the tariff plan but did not clear the bills for additional calls and data usage.

The corporation is yet clear bills worth Rs 58 lakh due to which calls have been barred for 90 per cent of the officials.

A senior GHMC official said that the issue came to their notices when the civic body has decided to switch the mobile network from Airtel to Idea.

However, the civic body has already cleared bills worth Rs 3 lakh. In order to clear rest of the bills worth Rs 55 lakh, the corporation’s IT wing has to seek the permission from higher authorities.

When asked about the calls barring, the official said that outgoing calls for nearly 1,000 mobile phones has been barred and they cannot access mobile data as well.
