Hyderabad: Stung by the continued use of mobile phones by teaching and non-teaching staff in government schools and colleges despite issuing instructions two years back, the government has now issued a circular to all the principals, to put an end to the practice of use of mobile phone during school and college hours and also install CCTV cameras in the school and college premises.

Top officials of State Education Department told The Hans India that the MEOs and DEOs have been asked to conduct surprise visits to the schools in their jurisdiction and take action against teachers and other staff who are found using phones in the classrooms and during working hours.

The government is keen to ensure that the classrooms are now mobile free zones. In December 2014, the Department of School Education had banning use of cell phones and had asked the DEOs and the regional joint director of school education to implement the instructions.

The order stated that “use of cell phones in educational institutions is prohibited” and that “neither teachers nor students should be permitted to carry mobiles in classrooms”. But still the staff continues to use the cell phones.

This action follows the visit by Education Minister Kadiam Srihari to some schools on Friday where he found the teachers using cell phones during working hours. The minister warned the school authorities and asked them to put an end to this practice.

Officials said it has also been decided that an awareness camp should be organised in all schools on the ill-effects of using phones. The education department had recently conducted a study and found that extensive use of cell phones by teaching staff in schools was one of the main reasons for the poor performance of students in the public exams in many government schools.

In addition to this, district squad teams are also being constituted to monitor the use of mobiles by staff for one month in all government schools and colleges. Disciplinary action will be taken against those who are caught using phone in classrooms.

Apart from this, the government is also planning to introduce biometric system in all schools to monitor the attendance of teachers.
