Hyderabad: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government’s flagship programme ‘KCR Kits’, which intends to provide child care necessities to the newly born and mother, was one among the several other schemes which could not get an approval in the united Andhra Pradesh.

According to officials in the Medical and Health department, the scheme was designed five years ago due to the growing Maternal Mortality Rates (MMR) and Infant Mortality Rates (IMR) and placed before the Congress government in the united Andhra Pradesh.

Speaking to The Hans India, a senior official from the Medical and Health department said the scheme had been designed mainly to prevent the newly born from any infections that could have serious long-term effects. It was against this backdrop that the scheme was redesigned to attract more and more prospective mothers to the government run hospitals for institutional deliveries.

“Originally, the proposal had only items like baby oil, mosquito net, powder, napkins, diaper and other few essential items. However, more items like sarees, toys for child and the like had been added to it so as to make the kit useful for a period of three months,” the officials said. So far nearly more than 15,000 mothers and infants benefitted from the scheme for which the government had allocated Rs 605 crore for the current financial year.

KCR Kits was not the only scheme which did not get approval in the erstwhile AP, another proposal to hike financial assistance to encourage institutional deliveries in the government hospitals had also received cold response. But, the same has got a new lease of life after the formation of the new State and it has been implemented on the lines of Tamil Nadu, providing Rs 12,000 for prospective mothers, Rs 13,000 in case the newly born was a girl child.

The financial assistance under the scheme will be released directly to the beneficiaries account in three phases. The government schemes have been benefiting about 50 lakh prospective mothers, following revamping of several schemes, the sources added.
