Hyderabad: Though the Telangana government had accorded the status of first language to Urdu in Hyderabad, students who want to pursue BA in Urdu medium are in for a shock as they have been denied admission in Dr B R Ambdekar Open University (Braou). The University provides courses in Telugu and English apart from Urdu.

Many students, who took the examination on March 26 and have qualified in the eligibility test for the undergraduate courses, are now worried over the varsities decision to discontinue Urdu medium. Those who applied for Urdu medium are being asked to choose either Telugu or English.

Explaining about the decision, Director Academics Dr Bhanouth Lal told The Hans India that the admissions into Urdu medium BA course has been kept in abeyance as they do not have required faculty. Many of the existing staff have retired leading to shortage of staff.

The government, he said, had recently sanctioned new posts and they were now in the process of appointing the faculty members and it may take about two or three months
before they can revive the
admissions.

Reacting to it, social activist Lubna Sarwath said that this was a flimsy excuse. The university knew that they were not having enough faculty even before they conducted the eligibility test. By now they should have taken measures to ensure that new staff was recruited.

There is no dearth of qualified Urdu professors and lecturers in Hyderabad. The University is playing with the career of Urdu medium students. They have no option but to drop out from studies, she said.

Lubna said Braou should pay compensation to students, especially girl students of Urdu medium. The University should also introduce Urdu medium in more streams such a social welfare, psychology and education.

The All-India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen has also taken serious note of it and is in the process of finding out details like how many students were affected by this act of Braou.

The University has removed the page consisting these details from its website. Once the MIM gets the details, its leadership would be submitting a representation to the Government urging them to ensure that the academic year of Urdu medium students does not get affected.
