Karimnagar/Warangal: As Karimnagar (undivided) district continues to hold the dubious record of topping the country in the number of women delivering through a surgical incision in the mother’s abdomen and uterus, known as caesarean section (C-section), neighbouring Warangal is not far behind in the race.

Apparently, the C-section rate is higher in private hospitals comparatively to State-run institutions for obvious reasons, and what is also alarming is the influence of non-medical factors such as penchant for superstitions about date and time of delivery etc.

The National Family Health Survey 2014-15 (NFHS-4) points out that rate of C-sections has doubled over the last decade in India. Of which, with 74.9 per cent Telangana has the highest number of such deliveries in private hospitals.

With there was no mechanism to identify whether there was a real medical necessity or not, invariably the procedure is being misused for commercial gains.

The hospital managements were not alone to be blamed for this; the penchant for superstitions about date and time of delivery is also driving the people to opt for surgery way of delivery.

Contrary to the WHO norms that suggest a rate of 10 to 15 per cent is considered appropriate for C-sections, Telangana has the questionable record of 75 per cent in private institutions and 41 per cent in public institutions.

To go further into the details, while the private hospitals in Karimnagar have recorded a near 90 per cent of surgical deliveries, government hospitals fared a bit better bringing down the rate to 60 per cent, according to official sources.

In Warangal undivided district, the situation is no different as the region too experiencing caesarean epidemic. It’s learnt that at least 70 per cent of deliveries taking place in private hospitals were via surgery.

Speaking to The Hans India, Karimnagar DM&HO Dr A Rajesham said: “Plans are afoot to take up a campaign to bring about awareness about the importance of normal deliveries.

Collector Sarfaraz Ahmed will hold a meeting with the members of IMA and local gynaecologists in a bid to bring down the number of C-section deliveries.” He said that administration will install flexis promoting normal deliveries in all hospitals soon.

“Majority of people, fearing labour pain or in the name of auspicious day and time, opt for C-section, this despite our advice to go for normal delivery,” Rajanna-Sircilla district hospital superintendent R Thirupathi said. He said that there are some private hospitals in Hyderabad that have painless labour facilities prefer normal deliveries. On the other hand, the hospital managements to avoid unnecessary complications from patient side readily accept deliveries via surgical way.

“The increase in people’s paying capacity has also driving them to go for C-sections. The other reason, of course not openly debated, is the misconception of losing sexual pleasure due to giving of vaginal birth,” a senior gynaecologist in Warangal said, pointing out reasons for steep rise in C-sections.
