Hyderabad: The Congress on Thursday alleged that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has vested interests in acquiring the 30-acre Bison Polo grounds from Defence and held that the property which served public purposes would end up as a commercial space.

The Congress demanded that the Centre should not yield to any explanation by the Chief Minister like construction of new Secretariat. Speaking to media persons here at Gandhi Bhavan, party senior leader and former Minister Marri Shashidhar Reddy questioned the Centre, which has reportedly agreed to handover the land to the State government, on the pretext of the construction of new Secretariat.

He said despite 60 per cent of space in the existing Secretariat lying vacant, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government had tried to push its demand for the Defence Land. “If the Centre hands over this precious land, Secretariat would remain in the same place and K Chandrashekar Rao would come up with a new idea of commercialising the huge chunk of land for his personal benefit,” he alleged.

While referring to the reports, which appeared in some sections of the media that the Centre had informally agreed to hand over the space to the State government, Reddy said the open ground which was used by public would end up in constructions like hotels and malls in the name of development.

He said there were numerous judgements by High Court and Supreme Court against ‘change of land usage’. The Centre should reconsider the decision to handover the Bison Polo grounds or else the Congress would resist any move. If Centre fails to withdraw the decision, we shall approach Courts and fight it legally in the interests of people,” the leader added.
