Hyderabad: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has called for a report from Principal Secretary of the School Education on heavy school bags and homework by October 31.

Athyuta Rao, president, BalalaHakkulaSangham, had complied a report on severe violation of child rights in the name of homework and heavy school bags. He sought directions to the Principal Secretaries of School Education in Telangana State and Andhra Pradesh.

In both the States,children were made to study more than a minimum of nine hours a day or more without any physical activities.The children were given heavy homeworks,and it would take three hours to complete it. The parents are sending the children again to tuition centres till 10 in the night. “With this homework pressure on children are mounting and theyare facing mental trauma and tension. They are not getting enough sleep, affecting their health.

With the heavy school bags weight more than the body weight of the children, the physical health of the children is very adversely affect like bending of spine. The heavy school bag system is prevailing in the private schools of the both the States.

These actsseem the private schools are clearly violating the child rights and taking away the childhood from chidren, which is a major threat to their physical and mental growth. AthyutaRao said, “We have brought this notice to officials concerned several times for the past several years, but all pleadings are in vein.”
