Malkajgiri: The garbage yard at Naredmet Municipal Ground has become a major cause of concern for several residential colonies in the vicinity for quite some time. The ground, which was once vibrant with sports activities and other functions, is now stinking, as garbage got piled up, with no proper mechanism in place to handle the filth effectively.

The autos, which collect garbage door-to-door from various colonies gather at this ground and transfer the garbage to lorries. The transfer of garbage and the activity make the residential area feel suffocated with foul smell. In addition, the filthy surroundings have become breeding ground for mosquitoes and flies, spreading diseases.

Locals appealed to the Malkajgiri MP Malla Reddy and the local legislator Chintala Kanaka Reddy to ensure relocation of the dumping yard in Naredmet Municipal Ground. They alleged that the issue remained the same even after several appeals to the local corporator K Sreedevi and other officials concerned. Residents allege that contagious diseases are spreading because of insanitary conditions prevailing in the area.

Retired Defense officials earlier protested on the issue. The officials then made temporary arrangements by installing tin sheets around the yard. There are allegations that children are employed at the dumping yard. Naredmet police station and Tahisldar Office are also located near the dumping yard.

BJP State convener and ex-serviceman G Ramana Reddy said it was a high time for the government to intervene in to the issue and find a solution by relocating the garbage dumping yard.

BJP leader T V Siva Prakash expressedanger stating that officials were turning a deaf ear to their issue. He said the officials in turn questioned the locals to show alternative site for dumping yard. He blamed the garbage collectors for not segregating wet and dry waste. “Waste from the chicken shops andexcreta of pigs that are being reared at RamakrishnapuramCheruvu are also being thrown in to the dumping yard here.

The pungent smell, breeding of mosquitos and flies are the factors causing inconvenience to public. The GHMC is not supplying bleaching powder and not doing fogging. The place which is amidst several colonies like Defense Colony, Saptagiri Colony, G K Colony, Bharani Colony and J J Nagar Colony is meant be a park with green plants giving fresh air rather than being a dump yard which makes people sick,” he added.
