Secunderabad: The police stations built during the British era in the Secunderabad Cantonment are bursting at the seams and the Telangana Police Department’s request for allotment of land in the Cantonment area for building new stations are awaiting response from the authorities concerned.

While Marredpally police station built way aback in 1877 is still awaiting approval from the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB), the Kharkhana police station that functions out of an old cattle shed has got clearance for allotment of land at Asbestos Colony and work has started on the 1,000 square yards plot. SCB CEO SVR Chandra Sekhar said, “The Marredpally police station file has been forwarded to the Ministry of Defence.”

Forty per cent of land at Asbestos Colony has been allotted for Kharkhana police station out of Class ‘C’ land which was a part of a park. Officials at SCB said it was far easier to allot land for the police station as the board could decide, but in the case of Marredpally police station, the approval has to come from the Director General Defence Estates, Southern Command, Pune.

C Uma Maheshwar Rao, Inspector, Marredpally police station says, “We are hopeful that our request for land at Fisherpura near Picket will be agreed upon soon.” It may be noted that the previous proposal for land close to Jubilee Bus Stand was rejected. In the meanwhile, the small police station at Marredpally runs from the old Customs Department outpost. On an average, it gets five to seven petitions per day and for lockup, the Mahankali police station is used as there is not enough space at the police station.

The Police Department has requested for 2,500 square yards land at Fisherpura. Police personnel are hopeful that the land to this extent is allotted as the Marredpally police station jurisdiction extends to quite a few areas and they would need a big place. East and West Marredpally, Water Board office, Civil Court office, SCB office, Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) and GHMC zonal office and several schools and hostels come under it.
