Telangana sees spike in number of beneficiaries
The number of applicants for Kalyana Lakshmi Scheme and Shaadi Mubarak Scheme, aimed at providing financial assistance for marriages of poor girls, has risen to 2.3 lakh and is expected to touch 2.5 lakh by the end of September 2017, thanks to the enhanced amount and decentralisation of sanctioning process.
Hyderabad: The number of applicants for Kalyana Lakshmi Scheme and Shaadi Mubarak Scheme, aimed at providing financial assistance for marriages of poor girls, has risen to 2.3 lakh and is expected to touch 2.5 lakh by the end of September 2017, thanks to the enhanced amount and decentralisation of sanctioning process.
These schemes provide financial assistance to meet marriage expenses of prospective brides with 18 years and above, from the SC, ST, BC, EBC and minority sections.
According to sources in the Social Welfare Department, the scheme had been received well by the people, but, at the same time, it had faced certain delays until last year as the Revenue Divisional Officers (RDOs) had been appointed as verification officers of the applications and district level authorities as sanctioning authorities.
Speaking to The Hans India, Commissioner for Scheduled Castes Development P Karunakar said the government had decided to simplify the procedure so that more beneficiaries from the poorer sections of the State could benefit from these schemes.
“It was against this backdrop that instead of district authorities, now, the Mandal Revenue Officers (MROs) have been designated as the verification officers. The RDOs have been given the sanctioning authority under the schemes.
Besides, it has been made mandatory to involve the local MLAs in the scheme,” he added. This had resulted in regular monitoring of the scheme implementation by the local MLAs and as the sanctioning authority had been given to the RDOs, it helped preventing delays.
Adding to this, the government had hiked the financial assistance from Rs 51,000 to Rs 75,116. This had further attracted more people coming forward to avail the assistance, making the overall number of beneficiaries in the current fiscal touching 2.3 lakh and the total number is expected to touch 2.5 lakh by the end of September this year, the official said.
So far, the government had sanctioned Rs 1,200 crore towards Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak schemes and 68,000 SCs, 38,000 STs, 54,000 BCs, 2000 EBCs, 65,000 minorities had been provided financial assistance.
