Hyderabad: Political and religious groups on Sunday intensified their demand of Union government’s intervention through diplomacy or usage of force to stop ‘genocide’ of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

Under the banner of Majlis Bachao Tahreek (MBT), a protest rally and public meeting was organised against the atrocities against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. The rally was led by Majeedullah Khan alias Farhat Khan, president of the party. The protest rally which started from Yakutpura Railway Station culminated into a protest public meeting at Yakutpura Bada Bazaar in the old city of Hyderabad.

Addressing the protest meet, Farhat Khan criticised the criminal silence of UNO, human rights groups and the world leaders who claim to spread peace in the world. He said the Central government should take note of the Non-Refoulment principle defined in UNHRC, before thinking of deportation of the refugees.

Amjed Ullah Khan, party spokesman, said as per UN estimates, 1.23 million Rohingya Muslims were forced to flee after August 25 crackdown in Rakhine State by Myanmar Military. He asked the Union government to take tough stance, if diplomacy failed in convincing Myanmar.

He recalled that when East Pakistan suffered under West Pakistan’s administration during Indira Gandhi’s time, it launched attack to end the atrocities. In a separate programme organised by Jamaat-e-Islami Hind at Exhibition Grounds, leaders representing various political parties attended. Deputy Chief Minister Mohammad Mahmood Ali requested the Union government to drop deportation plans of the refugees, as there was no scope for their survival in their homeland.

While CPI general secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy strongly criticised the silence of UNO and Prime Minister Narendra Modi who despite his recent visit to Myanmar failed to discuss the issue with Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel Peace Prize winner.
The programme was presided over by JIH state president Hamed Mohammed Khan. Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir, former MP Aziz Pasha, CPM state secretary D G Narsinga Rao and several other leaders also spoke.
