21 acquitted; victims to challenge verdict in HC

Nizamabad: The Nizamabad District SC, ST Sessions Court on Monday convicted and sentenced 14 persons, including a woman and a couple, to life imprisonment for their involvement in the murder of Forest Range Officer Gangayya on September 14, 2013, in the Nallavelli forest area of Darpalli mandal.

The court heard the case during the last four years. It acquitted 21 of the 36 persons, who faced charges of murder. One of the accused died during the hearing.

The convicted persons were shifted to the district prison. Some victims said that they would challenge the day’s ruling in the Andhra Pradesh High Court at Hyderabad.

The murder occurred when the officer, along with the staff, had gone to the spot on information that some persons of Nallavelli village were cultivating forest department lands, after grabbing them.

When he questioned them, some villagers attacked about 30 the department staff, it was alleged. Gangayya was killed on the spot. The incident had become sensational then.
