Hyderabad: City is to get one more Doppler radar near Dundigal Air Force Station with an estimated cost of Rs 8.5 crore. The additional radar which will be commissioned by next year would cover additional 250 kilometres.

The existing Doppler radar in Begumpet has the coverage of 250 kms the new radar would help further to get accurate weather report. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said that Doppler weather radar can provide area specific rainfall and storm warnings which is beneficial for aviation related services, disaster management and emergency response authorities. In conjunction with data from other sensors such as satellites, better forecasts and warnings can be achieved leading to minimal loss of property and life.

The major advantages of Doppler Weather Radar include wind speed measurements during cyclones and thunderstorms which was not possible in conventional weather radar.
