One more Doppler radar to dot Dundigal

The existing Doppler radar in Begumpet has the coverage of 250 kms the new radar would help further to get accurate weather report. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said that Doppler weather radar can provide area specific rainfall and storm warnings which is beneficial for aviation related services, disaster management and emergency response authorities. In conjunction with data from other sensors such as satellites, better forecasts and warnings can be achieved leading to minimal loss of property and life.
The major advantages of Doppler Weather Radar include wind speed measurements during cyclones and thunderstorms which was not possible in conventional weather radar. With better estimation of rainfall with detection of heavy rains and generation of warnings, it will provide additional inputs to numerical weather prediction models for generating better weather forecasts.
According to DR KJ Ramesh, Director General of Metrology, IMD along with Indian Air force will commission a new Doppler radar at Dundigal. He said that the radar will be purchased in accordance with the rupee value in the international market which will cost about Rs 8.5 crore.
He said that two Doppler radars will provide information which will be 94 per cent accurate. He also said that radar will provide accurate information about rainfall one hour earlier, which will help the authorities concerned to take precautionary measures like relief and rehabilitation measures, diverting traffic and other related issues.
"A series of radars are being installed in the country and they will be completed by 2019. Of this 11 are by the Indian Air Force and 11 by the Indian meteorological department", he said. IMD Hyderabad director Y K Reddy said that the department is planning to set up a automatic rain gauges in every village of Telangana in order get the accurate weather information.
