Hyderabad: The growing menace of ineligible candidates taking admissions under management quota in several private professional colleges is turning into a big headache to the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad (JNTUH).

According to sources, the affiliated colleges under JNTU-H have been running bachelors’ and masters’ degrees in engineering and management courses. About 30 percent seats in these colleges are filled up under the management quota.

Speaking to The Hans India here on Tuesday, a senior official said that the students who had gone through the common entrance tests are allocated seats under the convener’s quota in different affiliated colleges.

And, the original certificates of the students are being verified during the counseling process and acknowledgment cards are being issued.

However, most of the students are reluctant to take seats allotted to them under the convener quota and instead, are opting to take admission under management quota in a college of their choice.

Besides, there are students who take admission under Non-Resident Indian (NRI) quota and those without appearing for the entrance test, are taking admissions under the management quota.

The colleges are admitting them under the last two categories of students directly have to ensure that they fulfill the requisite eligibility criteria, like the minimum percentage of marks in the group of subjects in the qualifying examination and the like.

It was in case those who are taking direct admissions under the management quota that no verification process of original certificates is taking place until recently.

On receipt of several complaints and the following the direction of the TSCHE, the JNTUH has decided to carry out the process of verification of certificates.

And, during the verification process, the JNTU-H officials had found that 10 per cent out of about 650 students who had taken admission into MBA course in the private professional colleges affiliated to the University had been found ineligible.

For the verification process, the JNTU-H has fixed a fee of Rs 300 to meet the operational expenses in carrying out the process. And, this was done by many other universities. For example, the Osmania University collects Rs 500.

Even the Bar Council of India in its recent directive, had asked the State Bar Councils to send the photocopies of the certificates to the concerned boards and universities for verification of certificates submitted for the enrolment. For this, the applicants should remit Rs 2,500, the official said.

When contacted the JNTU-H, Registrar Dr. N Yadaiah said, “It was to ensure that the students do not land in any kind of problems by taking admissions without meeting proper eligibility criteria.” Secondly, it was the mandate of the University to ensure and maintain the standards and quality of the degrees as per the norms.
