Hyderabad: The High Court at Hyderabad on Monday expressed its consternation at some of the BTech students seeking to complete their courses without attending the college.

It pointed out that the rules do not allow for such a practice and also questioned what would be the use such studies. It rejected the plea to direct the university to allow the petitioner students to sit for examination even though they do not possess requisite attendance.

The division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice Abhinand Kumar Shavili made these observations while hearing a writ appeal filed by Registrar of JNTU against the single judge order directing the university to allow the students with less attendance to sit for examinations.

The counsel for the university informed the bench that as per rules, the students must have 75 per cent attendance to be eligible for writing examinations and those below that are not allowed to write examinations. He said there are many Supreme Court judgments which ruled against granting any exemptions in this regard.

The bench commented that it cannot interfere in this issue and it is for the university to take a call on this. Because such exemption was granted during the Telangana agitation once does not mean that it can be given always.

It suggested that the university consider and inform the students who have attendance between 65 and 75 per cent as the rules make it clear that those below 65 per cent attendance must not be allowed to sit for exams. It disposed of the appeal with this direction.
