Hyderabad : Panchayat Raj Minister Jupally Krishna Rao on Friday announced that the Telangana Government would conduct the local bodies' polls only after the establishment of new Gram Panchayats in the State.

In his reply to a question raised by MLA payam Venkatshwarulu, Rathod Bapu Rao and R. Ravindra Kumar during Question Hour in Legislative Assembly, the minister said there was a proposal to upgrade Thandas and Girijana Adivasi Gudems having population of over 500 people into Gram Panchayats. He said, so far 1757 such Thandas and Gudems have been identified. He said guidelines for their conversion into Gram Panchayats were under preparation.

The minister said the term of present Gram Panchayats would end on 1st August 2018 and next elections would be held as per scheduled after forming new Gram Panchayats. He said presently there were 8,624 Gram Panchayats while there were about 23,917 Thandas and Gudems. He said efforts were on to strengthen the local bodies and a new Bill was being introduced in the ongoing session to strengthen the Gram Panchayats in the State.
