A video showing Hyderabad police allegedly assaulting students with lathis at the Osmania University campus has gone viral on social media.

The video shows a group of students in a room with loud banging on the door from outside. Suddenly, the room’s door is kicked down and a group of policemen wearing protective vests and helmets burst into the room using lathis on the students before taking them away.

This incident occurred following a 21-year-old student’s suicide at the campus hostel on Sunday. The student, E Murali was found hanging in the bathroom of the University’s Maneru Hostel.

According to the reports, a suicide note was found which indicated that Murali was not prepared for the upcoming examinations, hence he was taking the step.

However, the students alleged that the handwriting in the suicide note did not match that of Murali and argued that he was depressed over the possibility of unemployment.
Following this, protests ensued as students blocked access to Maneru Hostel for many hours refusing to let Murali’s body be taken away for post-mortem.

The students further alleged that police who were called in to diffuse the situation proceeded to lathi-charge and assault students. However, the police claimed that they only threatened students with force to identify and detain trouble-makers.
