Following the clashes between the Adivasis and Lambadis, a tense situation is prevailing in the Adilabad district.

According to the reports, five people were killed in the clashes that occurred in Utnur Mandal's Husnapur.

Heavy police forces were deployed to bring the situation under control. Sources reveal that the areas witnessed major destruction with many shops getting burned.

The police officials informed that tight police security arrangements were made in tension-prone areas such as Utnur and Asifabad adding that the situation is peaceful with the implementation of Section 144.

IG Nagireddy, speaking on this matter appealed to the people not to believe in the rumours but also urged strangers not to approach the area as a precautionary measure. He even said that groups of police personnel are being placed in different places in view of the Bandh call given by Adivasis.

The Adivasis in Telangana belong to the north-west region of the state, comprising mainly of Adilabad and Kommaram Bheem districts.

While they have been utilising the reservations for Scheduled Tribes (STs), their Constitutional right, in educating themselves and earning jobs, an exodus of Lambada tribes have begun since 1976 onwards, to include their tribe in the list.

With the Lambada population being at least three times the population of all the other tribes in the state, put together, the Adivasis are demanding that Lambadas should be removed from the list of STs and are urging intervention of the government and officials.

The Telangana government is yet to respond in this regard.
