Hyderabad: Telangana State power utilities are likely to submit new tariff proposals for 2018-19 to the Telangana State Electricity Regulatory Commission (TSERC) in a day or two. Power utilities have been demanding tariff hike in view of increased financial burden due higher power purchase cost, employees’ salaries and pension liabilities.

Official sources said the TSSPDCL (Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited) and TSNPDCL (Northern Power Distribution Company Limited) have already estimated their Aggregate Revenue Requirement for 2018-19 at Rs 35,774 crore.

Round-the-clock power supply to agriculture and industries and power demand for the just launched Metro rail in Hyderabad forced the power utilities to buy more power to meet the demand. To meet the growing demand, the utilities estimated the energy requirement at 64,291 million units and put the availability at 67,573 MU with a surplus of 3,282 MU for next year in the ARR which was submitted to the Regulatory Commission recently.

It is estimated Rs 2,404 crore is required to meet the additional power demand, officials said. The utilities may propose increase in power tariff by 10 to 25 paise per unit. It is learnt that government may not support the tariff hike proposal as the 2019 elections are one year away only.
