The storage level in Manjeera project has come down to 13 tmc as water has been discharged from the project to the lower reaches of the project to quench the people’s thirst.

Villages, tribal thandas and remote villages on the banks of Manjeera River are reeling under severe drinking water crisis.The ground water table has already been receded to 19 meters in Narayanakhed, Hatnura, RC Puram, Zaheerabad and Raikod and other mandals.
Further, the ground water table in Chinnaramayampet, Chinna Sankarampet, Siddipet and Husnabad and Mulug is fast receding.

The state government has been assuring to provide drinking water to all the households completing the Mission Bhagiradha drinking water scheme. But the execution of scheme is going on at a snail’s pace.

The intra-village first-phase works of the Mission Bhagiradha are being executed at a cost of Rs 57.48 crore in Nyalakal, Munipalli and Jharasangam mandals, while the second phase of the works commenced in rest of the Sangareddy district at a cost of Rs 335.41 crore. Contractors are not coming forward at many places as the rates are not remunerative to them.

The crucial OHSR works are progressing at slow pace. Though 794 OHSR works have been granted with an outlay of Rs 335.41 crore, construction of 400 water tanks alone is going on.

In Narsapur segment, first phase of intra-village works taken up at a cost of Rs 69.61 crore are progressing. So also the works taken up at a cost of Rs 47.04 crore are progressing in Gajwel segment.

In Siddipet district, out of the 487 OHSR works, only 100 works are under progress. A pipeline for a distance of 2,574 km has to be laid. The pipeline works did not commence in many villages.

The rural water supply department has been preparing a contingency plan to tide over drinking water crisis in the current summer. Hiring of bore wells and tankers with the calamity relief fund (CRF) and undertaking repairs to hand pumps, desilting bore wells, deepening them,

undertaking repairs to pump sets and increasing the length of pipelines under the non-CRF works have to be included in the contingency plan. Meanwhile, the state government ordered officials to provide drinking water to all households in the district by the end of March.

Only main pipeline works have been completed under the scheme while the OHSR works and intra-pipelines laying work is incomplete at many places. The state government feels that no action plan is required to supply drinking water to affected areas since the Mission Bhagiradha will quench the people’s thirst.
