Hyderabad: Telangana Save Education Committee (TSEC) demanded that the courses deleted from the list of courses offered at the undergraduate level from the academic year 2018-19 be restored. The committee also demanded that the date for students to make appropriate choices also be extended accordingly.

In a memorandum, submitted to the Telangana State Council for Higher Education (TSCHE) Chairman Prof T Papi Reddy, TSEC organising secretary Prof K Laxminarayana and general secretary Prof G Hara Gopal and other office-bearers said that the courses and subjects deleted by the State Commissioner of Collegiate Education (SCCE) had been continuing for decades in government degree colleges (GDC) of the State.

The deleted courses by the SCCE include journalism, mass communication, geography, human rights and the like. “What is more curious is that while these courses were not offered from the academic year 2018-19 in the GDCs, the same is allowed to be continued in private degree colleges (PDC),” they said.

The TSEC office-bearers pointed out that the unilateral deletion of courses and subjects without valid academic reasons is detrimental to the growth of comprehensive knowledge and is opposed to the students of rural background and from oppressed communities, they said.

Speaking to The Hans India, Prof Laxminarayan said that our feedback from several colleges was that some of these deleted courses do have enough number of admissions. "We fail to figure out the reason for the closure of offering these courses, but, allowing the same to continue in private degree colleges," he said.

Laxminarayan said that it was not only courses in the humanities and social sciences, but also science courses were completely shut down in colleges like Nakrekal without any reason.

It was against this backdrop that we have asked the TSCHE to take steps for the restoration of the deleted courses. Besides, to extend the date for students to give options to take admissions in the undergraduate courses. Because, there may be many students who would like to study the courses deleted and if the date is not extended they would not get an opportunity to study the kind of courses they want to study, he added.

That apart, Lakshminarayana said that the TSCE representatives are also trying to meet the SCCE Navin Mittal to impress upon the importance of restoring the deleted courses.
