Hyderabad: Following the tragic incident of Former Union Minister and BJP MP Bandaru Dattatreya’s son Bandaru Vaishnav’s (21) death due to cardiac attack on Wednesday, city medical experts said that heart attacks at young age is very rare. According to medical experts, heart attacks at young age is very rare, but high cholesterol levels in the body leads to Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) causing premature cardiovascular disease.

Expressing views, Dr Sajja Lokeshwar Rao, a senior Cardiothoracic Surgeon from city stated that deaths due to FH are very rare, probably seen in one in 10,000 youngsters.

“Cardiac arrests generally start from 30-35 years age group. However, Familial Hypercholesterolemia disorder is seen in children as below as 12 to 18 years of age mostly suffering from obesity and high level of LDL (low-density lipoprotein) also called as bad cholesterol in blood," he said.

Lokeshwar Rao said that regular blood tests can help in identifying FH symptoms so that necessary treatment like getting an angiogram done would minimise chances of cardiac arrest in such patients.

Bandaru Vaishnav died of sudden cardiac arrest at 12.30 am on Wednesday. According to a medical bulletin issued by Care Hospitals, Musheerabad where Vaishnav was admitted at 10:30 pm on Tuesday, doctors’ aggressive efforts for two hours to save him were not successful. Vaishnav was shifted to the hospital in a collapsed condition with no pulse and blood pressure recordable at 10:30 pm, stated the hospital authorities.

“There was no cardiac activity seen. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation as per protocol started immediately and continued for two hours. Even peacemaker insertion was done as the patient was very young. Endotracheal tube ventilation was given. Despite aggressive efforts patient could not be revived,” it was stated in the bulletin.
