Charminar: Nahari kulcha or paya shorba along with naan ki roti remains relevant even during Ramzan across the Old City. Thousands of people prefer this dish for the sehri and for the night meal. The relatively lesser prices of the recipes gets it the popularity and acceptance. Hundreds of hotels across the city dispense these unique dishes during the early wee hours and in the night.

Naan ki roti which is also referred as Kulcha in a typical local language is cheaper and in the reach of poor people, thus it is the most sought after. There are dozens of roti makers (naan) across Old City who exclusively sell the naan.

Each Naan costs about Rs 7 to 10 based on the size. Rasool Khan, a naan specialist from Purani Haveli said that naan along with nahari was commonly consumed during normal days but in Ramzan it was consumed with other curries. He said, “Nahari is strong in taste because of the high number of spices used in it. People, who fast, generally avoid nahari or spicy curries because it may lead to constipation or other issues. However, naan is taken along with other soft curries at home.” Despite this, the sale of nahari increases during Ramzan, he said.

Naan is a Persian name and the famous dish has actually descended in Deccan from Iran. There are few famous points in city where nahari and naan are famously sold for several years like Bhoiguda, Madina, Yakutpura, Purani Haveli, Nampally and others. A restaurant owner at Mallepally said that shorba or paya were moderate during Ramzan. He said that people prefer easy or less spicy food during Ramzan but do not avoid it completely.

He said, “Most of the people prefer paya shorba along with nahari because it is affordable, good in taste and easy to digest besides nutritious.” The dish was commonly associated with a particular community earlier but over the years, it has gained popularity among cross sections. Rakesh Kumar from Uppuguda, said that people whose jobs were industrious need this food. He said, “It’s a different taste altogether. I always enjoy this food along with friends whenever it we get time.”
