Usually, on a Sunday afternoon, elders take a nap and kids are seen at swimming pools or at walkway at the SMR Vinay Fountain Head gated community in Hafeezpet, but this time around, the residents headed to the club house for the ‘Ghar Ki Biryani’ contest organised by The Hans India during the weekends. The contest is being organised in 20 gated communities and the winners from each colony would once again compete. At present, the contestants have to prepare the dishes at home and bring it to the venue, but in the finals they would be cooking at the venue. “The aim of the event is to encourage women to showcase their culinary skills,” said Sai Reddy, general manager, circulation.
Deepti PVR and K Aruna Prabha emerged winners in the non-vegetarian and vegetarian categories respectively and qualified for the finals. Aruna said, “The concept is a novel one and I am happy. Women are given a chance to showcase their talent. We thank The Hans India.” Deepti sounded confident and said that she would give it her all in the finals. She further added, “I took extra effort in garnishing and it paid off.” During the contest, Chef Lava Kishore prepared paneer popcorn for the participants that was lapped up by one and all and he later took to the serious business of tasting the dishes.
Later, Sai Reddy and Naveen Kumar, brand manager, Goldivia Refined Sunflower Oil, awarded certificate and vouchers to all the participants. BVR Anand from Sab Rent Karo and Ratnam from Home Town were also present on the occasion. Sai Reddy stated that biryani is the trademark of Hyderabad and the city is known for Hyderabadi biryani. The aim of this event is to celebrate the culture of Hyderabad. On Saturday, the ‘Ghar Ki Biryani’ contest was organised at Aparna Towers in Kondapur. Padmalatha won the contest in the vegetarian and Sana Khan in the non-vegetarian category.
Sana Khan said, “It is a traditional secret recipe, my mother-in-law makes and I improvised a bit. I think that did the trick. I am very happy to have won the contest.” Padmalatha who won the contest in the vegetarian category said, “I prepare both vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian dishes. I am looking forward to the finals.” Lava Kishore, a lecturer from a reputed hotel management institute who judged the contest, said that there is so much talent in the city, women just need a platform.
