An Army helicopter carrying about 3-4 senior officials including 'top' officers crashed near Coonoor in the nearby hilly Nilgiris district on Wednesday, police sources said.

A terrible accident took place in Tamil Nadu where an Indian Army helicopter crashed. The accident took place between Coimbatore and Sulur in Tamil Nadu. According to ANI, it is learned that Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat, his wife, his staff and some family members were also on board in the plane at the time of the incident.

"CDS Bipin Rawat, his staff and some family members were in the Mi-series chopper that crashed between Coimbatore and Sulur in Tamil Nadu. Search and rescue operations launched from nearby bases," ANI tweeted.

Upon receiving the information, the Army immediately rushed to the scene and carried out relief operations. The MI Series helicopter, which was leaving the Willington Army Center, apparently crashed near a hotel shortly after it started.

There were 14 people in the chopper at the time of the incident. According to Pradata Bharati, three of them were rescued and taken to hospital.

As per the reports, four dead and atleast two have been injured. However, the identity of dead and injured not yet revealed. While it is not yet confirmed if CDS Bipin Rawat is critically injured and in hospital or dead.
